Middle Tennessee softball sure looks to be strong in the coming years as they signed eight players on Wednesday as the early signing period opened for the 2016-17 class.
Kaylyn Slatter is another one of this class from the softball rich state of California. The Roseville, Calif. native has lettered every year she's been in high school in softball and is a three-time letter winner in the very demanding sport of water polo where she is the number one ranked goalie in the country.
She was a Colorado Sparkler All American All-Star from 2013-2015, and a USA Preps All-Star during the same period of time. The versatile power-hitting short stop won honorable mention All-Conference as a freshman in 2013, All-Conference in 2014-15, and All-League MVP 2014-15. She also plans to major in Pre-Vet.
"Kaylyn is bringing us athleticism and size that we have not had up to this point," Head Coach Jeff Breeden said. "Kaylyn is a definite impact player for us."
Veronica Westfall is already familiar with her future college town. The current Siegel Star will make the quick trip across Murfreesboro to wear the Blue and White next season. Westfall played on the Mid TN Elite travel team as well, keeping her talents local when she was not playing for her high school.
The pitcher was a short stop when the Stars won the TSSAA 3A State Championship in 2013. Westfall had moved to the circle by the time she led Siegel back to the State Tournament in 2015 where they finished fourth.
"Veronica is an athlete that shows great passion in her play," Breeden stated. "She hits for power and can run the bases. She is a player that fits perfectly the mold of athletes we are recruiting here. We have high expectations for this local 'star' athlete."
Lexi Cushing makes her way to Middle Tennessee from Flower Mound, Texas. The Lone Star native is a two-year letter winner in softball and earned a letter in basketball as well. She was named second team All-District in 2015, was the team leader in RBIs in 2014 and 2015, and is a two-time Offensive Player of the Year in basketball. The First baseman has shown her strength in the classroom as she is an Academic All-District performer as well.
Cushing is the daughter of John Cushing, a 1984 MT graduate, and could play anywhere from short stop, to catcher, to first base for the Blue Raiders.
"Lexi is a six foot athletic power hitter," Breeden explained. "She had played at a very high travel ball level with the American Freedom organization. This is the organization that produced current MT players Kelci Cheney and Carlie Jenkins. She will be a great addition to our program."
Page Patriot Savannah Rosevear-Goetsch rounds out the Blue Raider signees as MT snags another local player. She has started for her varsity softball team every year in high school where she has also been a captain. As a captain she was able to lead her team to the Class AA Region 6 Tournament for the first time in over a decade.
Rosevear-Goetsch won All-District in 2014 and 2015 in addition to being named to the Tennessee Softball Coaches Association All-Academic Team in 2015. She plans on taking her 3.78 GPA to MT's nationally touted Mass Communications department to become a sports reporting or TV news reporter.
"Savannah is a Middle Tennessee native who is a good catcher," Breeden stated. "She will bring a lot of energy to our group of catchers. We look forward to Savannah getting on campus."
